Open Educational Resources (OER) at SUNY Potsdam

This guide will help faculty find, assess and create OER.

Spring 2019 SUNY Potsdam OER Faculty Grant CFP

SUNY Potsdam has received funding from SUNY to encourage the use of Open Educational Resources on our campus. “Open Educational Resources (OER)” are teaching, learning, and research resources that reside in the public domain or have been released under an intellectual property license that permits repurposing by others.” Please refer to https://textbooks.opensuny.org/  for more information on the SUNY initiative.

Our faculty can get involved in this project and are eligible for funding to convert courses to OER format. Preference will be given to courses that are high-enrollment, have a high textbook price or are part of the General Education program. Funding Levels

  • Up to $250 stipend for other OER activities not defined below.
  • Up to $750 one-time stipend to be paid to those faculty who agree to revise a course to include at least 51% of the content as OER.

All funded faculty must teach at least one course of a minimum of 3 credits. These include lectures, seminars and labs that require texts for student use. In the case of courses with multiple faculty across sections: all faculty members that commit to the OER initiative can be awarded. This would not be limited to coordinators of courses. Funds must be expended in the 2018-2019 fiscal year.

Award Criteria

Grants will be awarded based on the following criteria:

  • Number of students impacted
  • Financial impact on students
  • Impact on student learning and retention
  • Other qualitative criteria

Award Expectations

Faculty member commits to:

  • Utilize OER for the majority of course materials in the course, per the grant amount stipulations, for a period of at least two semesters.
  • Agree to have the course carry the OER designator in Banner for at least two semesters.
  • Implement project plan and complete the project within 24 months.
  • Submit a short project evaluation reflecting on their experience implementing OER and the outcomes upon use, and meet at the end of the academic year to compare experiences, share findings, and make recommendations concerning the program.

TopHat and SUNY Potsdam Partnership

Campus is partnering with TopHat to provide our faculty and students with access to TopHat, a tool for digital classroom engagement as well as a platform for using and publishing OER.
