Construction Updates Summer 2019

Lougheed Learning Commons/Crumb Library

 

June 17th update:  Floors are mostly finished and the concrete base for the new sculpture in the Crumb Lobby will be poured soon.

June 6th update: The circulation desk has been moved (though the tidying continues)!  With more space available in the location under the stairs, this will become our single service point with circulation, research assistance, technology help, and information services offered from one desk. 

June 4th update: The lobby ceiling is nearly finished.  New LED light panels will increase the brightness and decrease the energy use.  The entry foyers are next in line for this upgrade.  On Wednesday, July 5th, the circulation desk is slated to be moved to its new home under the stairs opening up the lobby space for additional program planning and art installations.

Basic Starting Info: The Lougheed Learning Common's lobby will undergo construction during Summer 2019 to improve service by creating a single service point for library circulation, research assistance, and technology help for fall 2019.  Due to the disruption this work will cause, the Commons building will be closed for study space, collection use, and computer use during the following academic breaks:

  • May 20-22
  • June 28-July 7

During these times, all Commons office staff will be available by phone, email, and appointment, and the Center for Creative Instruction and Lougheed Center for Applied Learning will be open for drop-in visitors through the rear building entrance, which faces Carson Hall.

Crane Library

Physical Plant staff will begin construction work in Crane Library on May 20, to create swing spaces necessary to support faculty and students during the renovation of Bishop Hall in 2019-2020.  These renovations will also, upon completion of the Bishop Hall project, improve services for library users.  Due to the disruption this work will cause, the Crane Library will be closed for study space, collection use, and computer use during the following times:

  • May 20 to June 30
  • August 10 to August 18

During construction, library staff will be available by phone, email, and appointment to assist with library needs and issues:

The Lougheed Learning Commons will also be open for most of this time, offering library users another option for spaces and computer access.
The Crane library will be open starting July 1 to support the music courses which are offered in Summer Session 2.

Library Management System (ALMA) updates

Alma and Primo

 

June 17th update: Our data load has arrived and we are checking to see if there are any errors before releasing beta access to public view. 

June 4th update: Various behind the scenes technical work is ongoing.  Starting Thursday, July 6th, the circulation functions in our old system will cease and we will be managing check-out/check-in and other circulation tasks "manually" (with a simple tracking system of user ID and item barcode).  This will be in place for several weeks before our new system is in place, so we thank you in advance for your patience!  You will still be able to view our old catalog, but it will be static and not reflect any items checked-out or in after June 6th.

Basic Starting Info: The SUNY Potsdam College Libraries have a SIGNIFICANT software upgrade coming in mid-June to bring up a new Library Management System (Alma) for the entire SUNY System. This system encompasses our library catalog, manages our circulation to patrons and ALSO provides the framework for a new interface (Primo) for finding materials through the QuickSearch box on the library home page. 

What does this mean?

  • BearCat (the library catalog) and the current QuickSearch search box on the library homepage will both have a similar new interface.  (Beta preview available here, but it some things not yet working, e.g. linking out to ILL and other databases still in progress.)
  • All existing links to BearCat on the library pages will be re-linked to the new catalog, and the QuickSearch box on the home page will go to the new interface.
  • We will ABSOLUTELY be able to check out and check in materials during the transition, HOWEVER, there may be a span of several weeks when we will need to track this offline/on paper and so the information displaying in the catalog will be static and not up to date.  For example, a book that looks available may, in fact, be checked out.
  • If you are a faculty member teaching summer courses and will need to place items on reserve, PLEASE GIVE US YOUR RESERVE MATERIALS/REQUESTS AS FAR IN ADVANCE AS YOU CAN!!!!!  Reserves data is NOT transferable from the old system to the new, so we will need to re-enter all the reserves data after the new system comes up and will need to plan accordingly and have paper resources available to consult during the transition.   There will not be any slack to do things at the last minute; thank you for your understanding.
