DANC 320: 20th/21st Century Dance History: Newspapers

This guide discusses how to find each of the types of sources needed for DANC 320's research paper.

The New York Times, 1985-Present

The New York Times is probably your best bet as a source for relevant newspaper articles for this paper, both because New York is such a center of live theater & dance, and because our library has access to its historical issues.

To access NYT articles from 1985 to the present, use the New York Times, 1985-Present database, which is found in the dropdown box under the Databases heading on the library's front page.

New York Times Historical

Unfortunately, the SUNY Potsdam Library does not have access to electronic copies of the New York Times from before 1985, although we do have the entire run on microfilm.  The microfilm is located on the library's first floor, just outside the Library Director office, as is the microfilm reader/scanner.  If you wish to use the NYT on microfilm, just ask at the desk and a librarian can show you how to feed it into the reader/scanner.

An easier method, however, may be ordering the NYT through Interlibrary Loan, which will require you to create an ILL account.  In order to do so, click the Interlibrary Loan link on the library's front page.  Once you've made your account, you can submit a request for an article by clicking the New Request tab at the top of the ILL page, and then selecting Article from the dropdown menu.  Just be sure to provide as much information as possible, including the article's title, author (if any is given), the date, and the page number(s), so that the fulfilling library can find exactly what you're requesting.

Whether you want to use microfilm or order through ILL, you can still use the NYT's own website to search for relevant articles.  Just enter your terms into the search field at the top left of the Times' front page.

The results will show you the dates and page numbers for any articles found, which you will need to either locate the correct microfilm roll or to order through ILL.
