Finding Chemistry Articles

ACS Member Benefits

From a student perspective, the most valuable benefit from an ACS membership is 50 articles per year from ACS journals and access to SciFinder.  Students can get the same articles through Interlibrary Loan but the delivery takes time.  There are also discounts for the cost of attending meetings/conferences, insurance discounts, and other benefits.

How to Get a Student Membership

Students can purchase a student membership through the American Chemical Society website. Undergraduate student membership in 2021 is only $29/year and entitles you to 50 free ACS publication articles per year (faster than Interlibrary Loan if you've left things late).

Using the ACS database WITH a membership

A student membership to ACS allows you access to 50 articles per year.  However, access is not obvious.  Here is how to get to the articles you find.

  • Search as you see fit.
  • Click through to a result you want to use, then click on the PDF link (to the right).
  • If you have access for some reason (e.g. it's in the legacy archives or it is open access) you will see the PDF.
  • However, if it is not generally available to you, a yellow bar will appear that seems to deny access.
  • Scroll down BELOW the abstract to see the following box.
  • Log in to obtain access.
