Voting in New York including Absentee

Voting Absentee in NY

  • Deadlines - Absentee ballots must be requested by 10/27 (in person 11/2)  or postmarked by 10-27 (for most), and received by 11/3.
  • Absentee Ballot Electronic Portal
  • COVID-19:  Absentee ballets may be requested for reasons of health or temporary illness: "temporary illness includes being unable to appear due to risk of contracting or spreading a communicable disease like COVID-19."

Can I return an absentee ballot in person in New York?

     You may return the ballot in any of the following ways:

  • Put it in the mail ensuring it receives a postmark no later than November 3rd.
  • Bringing it to the County Board of Elections Office (the county where you are registered to vote) no later than November 3rd by 9pm.
  • Bringing it to an early voting poll site between October 24th and November 1st
  • Bringing it to a poll site on November 3rd by 9pm

Stamps for absentee ballots:

     A few states have postage paid election mailing (not New York though all registered voters are being sent postage paid absentee ballot applications)
     How many stamps do I need to put on the ballot if it isn't prepaid in my state?

  • It depends on how heavy the ballot is, one stamp per ounce.
  • Stamps cost 55 cents.
  • Stamps can be purchased at Student Mail Service, 111 Barrington Student Union and the U.S. Post Office, 21 Elm Street.  Grocery stores also often sell stamps.
