Ways 102 - Tomb Raiders & Art Restorers: Finding Articles Using Databases

Art Index

For this class, you'll be using Art Index, our database of scholarly articles about art history.  You can easily access Art Index from the alphabetical dropdown menu on the front page of the library's website.  Just select "Art Index (H.W. Wilson)" and click the Go button.

Once you're in database, you can conduct a keyword search in the boxes up top.  If you want to use more than one keyword (remember, it's always best to use 2-4), you can enter it in the next box.  And if you run out of boxes, just click the + sign to add another row.

Also remember to check the Peer Reviewed box so that you will only get peer reviewed, scholarly articles in your search results.  Since you need to be only using scholarly articles, this will make the database do the work & filter out everything that isn't appropriate for your assignment.

Now you've got your search results.  If the article shows a "PDF Full Text" icon, you can click that to immediately get a downloadable PDF of the article.  If it doesn't have that icon, click the "Find It" link, which will take you to other ways to access your article.

Note that you also have a Peer Reviewed box on the left, as well as a date range, which you can limit to only articles within specific dates.

Often, clicking the "Find It" link will take you to another database that has a PDF of the article, or to the web for full article access.  However, if you ever get this screen, it means our library does not subscribe to the journal that carries the article.  If that's the case, don't worry, we can still get you the article.  Just click the "Request copy via Interlibrary Loan" link to get an ILL form you can submit.  As with WorldCat, if this is the first time you've used ILL, you'll need to create an account.  We will order the article from another library, and send you an email once it arrives (often within the same day).

If you click the article's title in your results, you will get its catalog entry.  This includes its citation information--author, title, journal, volume & issue numbers, pages--along with a list of subjects.  Clicking on one of those subjects will take you to all the other articles in the database on the same subject, which makes them a nice shortcut for doing research.

Finally, you can track & save your research by using the tools on the bar to the right.  If you want to save a link to this page, use the "Permalink" option--the URL at the top of the page is only temporary & will not bring you back here.  You can also get citations for the article--for this class, you want to use "Chicago 17th Edition (Notes & Bibliography)."  Be warned, though, these citations often include minor errors, so ALWAYS CHECK THEM OVER WITH A STYLE GUIDE before turning in your paper.
