This guide is intended as an introductory first-pass for low-level Alma users. It does not replace the more extensive Ex Libris training materials linked in this guide and the extensive documentation at the Ex Libris Knowledge Center, but allows new users to get a sense of the system before diving into the details.
Many thanks to the Cal State Los Angeles libraries who graciously granted us permission to use their ALMA training libguide as the basis for this one.
What is Alma? Promotional materials say:
Word to the Wise:
SUNY is coming into Alma shortly after a major upgrade. We are using the "New UI" version of Alma. most documentation has been adjusted, but if you encounter something in the copious quantities of information from Ex Libris that doesn't quite scan, it may be referring to the previous interface. In addition SUNY is using "Primo VE" which is a new version of Primo. Similar ambiguity may be encountered in the Ex Libris support material though it is mostly updated. As both versions of Alma are often simply referred to as "Alma" and both of Primo referred to as "Primo", it can be challenging to decipher if one is confused because it is confusing, or if one is viewing old information.
All formal training starts at the Ex Libris Knowledge Center.
The above links will keep you busy, but if you want EVEN MORE, then check out the PDF guides for each area.
If you are interested in behind the scenes or cutting edge changes, check out the Developer Network for Alma or the Developer Network for Primo.
Alma sandboxes for the SUNY consortium are collectively shared, as are the passwords and accounts. That means that other folks "out there" can change things on the sandboxes we are collectively using. So don't be surprised if things look different the next time you log in.
